Urban Fabric

Historic and deteriorated urban fabrics often form the original and central core of cities. These areas possess significant cultural and historical value and essentially define the city’s identity. The historic fabric, as a subset of the deteriorated urban areas, contains buildings and monuments that hold architectural, historical, artistic, cultural, or religious importance. Beyond being part of the city’s neighborhoods, these fabrics narrate the story of the city’s origin and preserve the collective memory and culture of its inhabitants. The study of such contexts reveals the patterns of life, social interactions, and citizenship systems of the past — a true cultural heritage of the nation.

Central Courtyard

The central courtyard has been a key organizational and spatial element in the physical and functional structure of traditional houses in the hot and arid regions of Iran, including the city of Isfahan. Variations in dimension, symmetry, and the ratio of solid to void significantly influenced the surrounding spaces on all sides of the courtyard in traditional Isfahani architecture. The fundamental belief was that sunlight played a decisive role in spatial arrangement, and thus the courtyard was primarily designed to provide optimal natural light. Constructed according to the golden proportions of Iranian architecture, the courtyard ensured maximum daylight penetration. It was also designed as a vital space for living, social interaction, and connecting different parts of the house.

Design Advantages

Developing the “genetic identity” of the Isfahan Chamber of Commerce through the creation of a duality between upper and lower levels for public and private activities.

Harmony with the project’s context, inspired by the historical presence of central courtyards in hot climates.

Providing clear visual access throughout the project — both inward and outward — while maintaining privacy.

Functional zoning: administrative, educational, and managerial.

Program Considering the economic potential of Golpayegan County, the site was designated as a commercial and trade center for the region, represented through the Chamber of Commerce, Industries, Mines, and Agriculture. Accordingly, the project concept was developed to include administrative, educational, managerial, and communal spaces for the regional office of the Isfahan Chamber of Commerce, located in Golpayegan, with a total floor area of approximately 750 square meters
